Take a Reading Vacation

Summer is here and so is time for Summer Reading! It’s a great time for kids, tweens and teens to take the time to read for fun and also to read books of their own choosing that they might not have had time for during the school year. Your local library and even bookstores such as Barnes and Noble also even offer great incentives for kids and adults to read during the summer. Usually around this time I write a post promoting Summer Reading but this year I decided to let Melina from Reading Vacation guest post. Who better to tell kids why to read and what they might want to read than an amazingly well read tween book blogger? As a children’s librarian I know the weight a recommendation from another kid can carry so without further ado…welcome Melina!

TAKE A READING VACATION

THIS SUMMER

[2009_06_27_1152.JPG] Summer is the perfect time to get your reading on!  If you are a student like me, it’s hard to find free time during the school year, but summer opens up so many more reading opportunities.  I am taking full advantage of this break from school to FEED MY NEED TO READ!

A lot of adults think that tweens and teens hate reading.  They think that we would rather be playing video games or texting our friends.  Yeah, those are popular activities, but I will let you in on a little secret – most of us LOVE to read.  The problem is, most tweens and teens don’t look past the most popular titles or the books that have become movies.  You know, they think it wouldn’t be cool to read an unpopular book.

Ah, but that is where book review blogs come in.

Since I started my blog a few months ago, I have found out about (and read) a huge stack of books that I would never have known about otherwise.  Not only that, but I have also been able to narrow down my book choices by reading the reviews of bloggers who share my taste.  In case you are wondering, I prefer girlie books, mysteries, historical fiction, paranormal, fantasy, nothing too overly violent …. Woops, got a little off track there.

The point is, tweens and teen enjoy reading as long as the books capture their attention and win their hearts.  They just need a little nudge to get them looking at the right bookshelf so-to-speak.

I put together a little list of some favorite books that I have recently read and LOVED.  It looks like the only genre missing is romance.  Remember, I’m a little young for too much of that for now.

Heist Society by Ally Carter: Download Cover

Adventure ~  Heist Society by Ally Carter

Supernatural ~  Darkest Powers Trilogy by Kelley Armstrong

Girlie ~  The Cinderella Society by Kay Cassidy

Historical Fiction ~  Nobody’s Princess by Esther Friesner

The Iron King by Julie Kagawa: Download Cover

Fantasy ~  The Iron Fey Seriesby Julie Kagwa (The Iron King is on bookshelves, Winter’s Passage is available online, and The Iron Daughter releases August 1st, 2010)

Tween ~  Karma Bites by Stacey Kramer and Valerie Thomas (releases August 16th 2010)

If are looking to read something a little different, then check out some other book review blogs for recommendations.  There are plenty of tween and teen book bloggers out there who would just love to tell you about a great book.

If you are a parent, please don’t let anyone know where you heard about the little secret I shared earlier.

Enjoy your Reading Vacation!

Thanks Melina. It’s wonderful to have such a voracious reader and great blogger guest post. The fact that you are only ten still amazes me on a regular basis! Thanks for guest posting on Stiletto Storytime! If you are looking for great recommendations and reviews from the tween point of view make sure to check out the Reading Vacation Blog.
