Book Birthday & Giveaway: Faery Tales & Nightmares by Melissa Marr

Happy Book Birthday to Faery Tales and Nightmares by Melissa Marr.

“Dangerous promises and beguiling threats swirl together in a dozen stories of enchantments, dark and light, by New York Times bestselling author Melissa Marr. Uncanny and unexpected creatures appear from behind bushes, rise from under the seas, or manifest from seasonal storms to pursue the objects of their attention—with amorous or sinister intent—relentlessly.

From the gentle tones of a story-teller’s cadences to the terror of a blood sacrifice, tales of favorite characters from Marr’s Wicked Lovely novels mix with accounts of new characters for readers to fall in love with . . . or to fear.

Lush, seductive, and chilling, Melissa Marr’s stories revel in the unseen magic that infuses the world as we know it.”

I kind of have a love/hate relationship with the short story genre. For me it’s usually because short stories if they are well written…simply leave me wanting more. I want to know what will happen next, how it will end or just more depth in general from my reading material.

That was surely the case with most of the tales in Melissa Marr’s newest collection of stories filled with a plethora of unforgettable characters, differing styles and even what at times felt like a range of  time periods. Inside you will find a little bit of something for everyone from stories containing the characters of the bestselling Wicked Lovely series to the occasional vampire and even the almost folk tale-ish “Winter’s Kiss” which happened to be my personal favorite within the collection. In the end the volume is a array of stories  filled with variety of every kind, snippets of the darker side and tastes of true terror at times. It’s the perfect book to read straight through from beginning to end or to parcel out each night before bed. I can only hope we may see some of these stories later developed into much more by the very talented Marr in the future. Also if you haven’t- make sure to check out Marr’s most recent and only adult novel  Graveminder which I truly enjoyed a short while ago.

Review: Graveminder by Melissa Marr

Every town may have a pastor or priest, a funeral home and a cemetery to help the transition of the living into death but not many have a Graveminder like Claysville.  Then again most small towns do not also have a deal with the underworld regarding its citizens and their mortality.

Currently life long resident Maylene is in charge of continuing the Barrow family’s duty of keeping the dead of the town in the ground. However when one of the town’s dead is neglected in a heinous crime everything will soon change. The teenage girl Daisha is dead. Daisha is also hungry for both peace in her no longer living state and for mortal flesh. After an unfortunate “accident” a new Graveminder will have to come forth and be chosen as another chapter in the saga of Claysville and its deal with the devil begins.

Trying to unlock the key to the town’s secrets and the loss of a loved one, Rebekkah stumbles unaware upon a destiny that will take her and life long love interest Byron on a journey of unimaginable proportions. A successor must rid the town of a creature no longer living but still inflicting death in her search for peace. At her side will be the Undertaker to see her through to a place she could never imagine. A whole other world that exists beyond our own that is fanciful and yet eerie and perverse all at once.

In Melissa Marr’s latest book readers get a peek into the modern world of zombies that manages to be a combination of both sophisticated and traditional storytelling with a zombie twist.  The imaginative weaving of folk tale and horror story come together to create a story of unique and unending possibility.

Secrets are hidden all over the town of Claysville but they are only six feet deep in many places and some have trouble “staying where you put them”. Get ready for an interesting take on the dead that won’t remain that way from the bestselling young adult author of The Wicked Lovely series.

Adult readers will find they are in for a true treat as author Melissa Marr steps into the world of adult literature with a greatly unexpectedly one of a kind debut.

Graveminder by Melissa Marr will be released on May 17, 2011.

As a special offer you can pre-order Graveminder by Melissa Marr from BookPerk  by May 16th and get a free “Graveminder” themed engraved flask.

What I Read On Vacation in Actuality

Packing for a vacation with me can be very overwhelming considering I generally bring a book for each day that I will be gone in addition to some stand-bys in case of literary emergency. What I take planning to read often becomes somewhat scattered and somehow I make it through. On this last beach trip I truy enjoyed two books that I had brought along. The others just were of no real interest to me. I began Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr,  but just couldn’t get into the story. It just wasn’t for me and I could not get more than half way through. So that nixed the next two volumes in that series that I had toted to Florida as well. I devoured Valley of the Dolls much like I did years ago when I first read it in college. The perfect beach read indeed! An old stand by never to be forgotten.  I also adored Prayers for Sale by Sandra Dallas. It was one of the best books I have read this year. I had also taken Tan Lines by J.J. Salem which seemed to be a nice naughty beach read as well. After a few pages I realized it was a little too naughty for my taste and it was put aside as well. So after hauling a load of six books on a four day trip..I came out with two that I truly enjoyed and read completely. Then I had a ten hour car ride back with no book of any interest! You just never know! Note to self …take more books!

Vacation Reading

Well it’s that time again. Finally vacation! This year we are heading down to Sanibel Island for a few days sans baby which is both exciting and excruciating at the same time. But one thing it does mean is the uninterrupted joy of reading as much as I want! Woohoo! So here is what I have packed in my suitcase this vacation…. Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann (this one is a re-read). I haven’t read it in a few years though and I remember how much I enjoyed it the first time. If you can try to read the book before you see the movie! I am also going to read Melissa Marr’s Wicked Lovely series which have been on my list for quite awhile. I have all three packed which includes Wicked Lovely, Ink Exchange and Fragile Eternity. I also have a nice naughty British import called Tan Lines by J.J. Salem which has also been on my list a long time. So I think I am all set for a few days in the sun! What are you taking to read on vacation this year?
