“This enthralling confection of a novel, the first in a new trilogy, follows the transformation of a coddled Austrian archduchess into the reckless, powerful, beautiful queen Marie Antoinette.
Why must it be me? I wondered. When I am so clearly inadequate to my destiny?
Raised alongside her numerous brothers and sisters by the formidable empress of Austria, ten-year-old Maria Antonia knew that her idyllic existence would one day be sacrificed to her mother’s political ambitions. What she never anticipated was that the day in question would come so soon.
Before she can journey from sunlit picnics with her sisters in Vienna to the glitter, glamour, and gossip of Versailles, Antonia must change everything about herself in order to be accepted as dauphine of France and the wife of the awkward teenage boy who will one day be Louis XVI. Yet nothing can prepare her for the ingenuity and influence it will take to become queen.
Filled with smart history, treacherous rivalries, lavish clothes, and sparkling jewels, Becoming Marie Antoinette will utterly captivate fiction and history lovers alike.”
Two words to describe this first book in a brand new trilogy about Marie Antoinette: deliciously addictive. I honestly could not put it down and could not be more thrilled that there is more to come. While historical fiction about Marie Antoinette is not hard to come by (throw a book in the fiction section and you might hit one), Juliet Grey’s work Becoming Marie Antoinette still comes off fresh and exciting. While all the background we know about Marie Antoinette is still there, there is so much more detail and historical reference that Grey brings into her work. It’s definitely one of the best historical fiction works I have read in years.
The perspective in this first book is a very young ‘Toinette. The first person narrative truly brings you into the life of the young child that Marie Antoinette was as she was transformed into a Queen. It begins in her childhood and follows her life into Versailles as the dauphine of France. She is young, innocent and almost unrecognizable for the figure she will become. It’s a side of Marie Antoinette I had never really truly considered in many ways. And thus far…she’s extremely likeable. It will be intereseting to see how she develops further down the line as she ages and steps into the royal slippers of a Queen of France.
Well-researched and lovingly written with sparkling details-this new trilogy is not one to be missed by any lover of historical fiction or Marie Antoinette centered works. This book ends and leaves you wanting more. It’s almost a tease being so good…now the wait for Book 2 begins.

You’ve convinced me that I need to read this. I can’t think of any historical figure that I particularly like to read about.
Oooh, I have been going through a Marie Antoinette phase and have the Kirsten Dunst movie to watch tonight! So happy there is a new book on her and it is a trilogy, so we have something to look forward to! Crossing fingers-would love to win!

Kim- You will love this book then. I have read most of the historical fiction pertaining to Marie Antoinette over the years and I have to say this is one of the best. I cannot wait to see what the trilogy has in store for us. The books are said to cover everything from childhood to death.
I love reading about Martha Washington. She was an amazing figure. Thanks!
I can’t wait to read thus! My all time favorite historical figures have git to be the Tudors….I just can’t get enough of them. Thanks for the giveaway!

I love genealogy, so I really love reading books about people I’ve found a family connection too. Marie Antoinette has always interested me though.
Hi there,
You know I’m not sure if I have a favorite character actually. I like to read fiction where history is woven throughout and not necessarily about one particular character…Kim

Hmm, maybe Lincoln or Teddy Roosevelt. There are so many interesting people from history to read about. This book sounds particularly enthralling.

I’m not a big fan of historical fiction in general, but do like it by certain authors or on certain subjects. I’m currently reading Madame Tussaud, and it has gotten me interested in Marie Antoinette. Please count me in. Thank you!

Oh, jeez! How can I name just one?! From Cleopata to Eleanor of Aquitaine to Beryl Markham . . . it’s just not possible. I will admit that I don’t know much about Marie Antoinette, but this sounds like just the book to remedy that! Thanks so much for the chance to win a copy.

I remember reading one about Cassandra that has stuck with me for years, and Cleopatra. The Tudors are always good for a story, too. I’d like to find a good one about the Medici, or the Borgias, as well. That would be a tale!
Rae-Would either of those have been Margaret George’s works? She’s my favorite historical fiction writer and her “Cleopatra” is probably my all time favorite historical fiction work.
Historical figures I enjoy reading about include The Bronte Sisters, Anne Boleyn (a tragic life) and Aldolf Hitler. I usually read about historical figures in non-fiction books. Marie Antoinette appears to be such a colourful figure and I’m interested in her life story.
